THANKS TO Kyle, I was well fed for the test. I think it went fine. The first person I wanted to share the news with was Kyle, but I had to go to work. The fact that he was my first thought… freaked me out a little. I worried about hurting him. He was so new to all this. And okay, I worried about getting hurt myself. What was best here? How could I keep being with Kyle and protect us both? There was no denying Kyle was important to me. There was also no denying he kept me from parts of his life and might never be ready to come out of the closet. Would I even want him to? If I let this continue and Kyle came out, I might fall hard for him, and that would only end in pain. On the other hand, Kyle was so different from other guys. I halted outside the hospital doors. Here was the place I liked to hide. Kyle had basketball, and I had medicine. We were so much more alike than it appeared on the surface. Yet Kyle was making a huge effort to break all of his old patterns and be with me.

At the hospital my shift went quickly. Holly dropped by to meet me for a quick lunch in the cafeteria. The food was gross. We didn’t usually meet there—nobody did. But time was short today. She kissed me hello on the lips and linked our arms.

Usually I sat with Bobby at the nearby burger or barbeque restaurant, but the lab was swamped this week, and he had to cancel on me altogether. I missed Holly. We hadn’t seen each other much since her engagement party. I knew her loyalty was divided; she still hung out in my old house with Chance and Austin.

Holly got a Cobb salad and burger, and I got some pasta and fruit. The fruit made me think of Kyle. He would approve of my healthy choice. I usually got pasta and chocolate cake. Every small thing made me think about Kyle, I realized, from what I picked for lunch to what soap I bought.

“My treat,” Holly said at the cashier.

“No way. Mine.”

“No, it’s my turn,” Holly insisted. “You bought me lunch last time we met.”

“Thanks, but—”

“Just keep it at thank you.”

“Here. At least use my ID badge for the discount.”

“Fine. But I pay the rest.”

“Thank you, Martha Stewart.”

“Excuse me, a jailbird? Really? Can’t you pick a better rich woman?”

“Jesus. Okay. Gimme a second. Thank you, Oprah Winfrey?”

“Better. However, my favorite show host is Ellen. And no, it’s not the gay thing. It’s the dancing. And her love of animals.”

There was no arguing with Holly. But I planned to take her out somewhere far nicer than the hospital cafeteria next time. Her and Vanessa both. I imagined Kyle joining us. He had a good sense of humor that Holly would appreciate. Not being able to share Kyle with my friends made my heart tug.
